Pyrrole Disorder - what is it?
What is Pyrrole Disorder? It is a little known condition which can be initiated from severe or chronic stress or emotional trauma, which then triggers a genetic predisposition for excess production of a compound called HPL, which causes several nutrient deficiencies. Because food nutrients are needed for a lot of functions and processes in your body, a deficiency in more than one nutrient will cause many concurrent symptoms and conditions. These concurrent conditions (see below) are common, and together can help to identify Pyrrole Disorder (PD). Pathology testing is needed to confirm the condition.
There are other names for Pyrrole Disorder, such as Pyroluria (pyrroles in the urine), Kryptopyrroles, Mauve Disorder, or just "Pyrroles". I will most often refer to Pyrrole Disorder as Pyrroles or PD!

Symptoms of Pyrrole Disorder
Because Pyrrole Disorder cause many nutrient deficiencies, those nutrient deficiencies in turn will cause a lot of symptoms and diagnosed conditions, including:
- low energy, fatigue and poor endurance
- anaemia and low iron
- headaches and migraines
- digestive complaints - constipation, reflux, indigestion, heartburn, GORD/GERD, gas, bloating
- poor tolerance to stress, or an over-reaction to minor stresses
- depression and/or anxiety, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia
- sleep issues (can't get to sleep, or interrupted sleep)
- skin issues - acne, eczema, poor healing
- poor immune system and lots of infections
- allergies and intolerances to foods or environmental substances
- sensitivity to light, sounds, tastes, medications
- weight issues, especially weight gain
- and many more symptoms.
Causes of Pyrrole Disorder
There are several known causes of Pyrroles, with the main one being stress! Stress that triggers the changes in Pyrroles, however, is usually strong or severe emotional trauma or chronic stress over a long period.
When we know what the causes are (which we actually do know), it makes it easier to reduce symptoms and turn this condition around! To treat Pyrroles, the causes of it MUST be investigated and identified, so that these causes can be stopped and resolved. In addition, other treatments are needed to reduce your symptoms to improve your quality of life.
Sadly, the medical system tends to not look at finding the causes of your health sissues and only treating the symptom, which is a major reason why conditions aren't ever resolved, and they become worse over time.
Reducing the symptoms of Pyrroles can take time, and from experience, the younger the person is when diagnosed and treated, the quicker they can recover from the nutrient deficiencies to improve their health and wellbeing. Some improvements will be noticed within weeks and continue to get better over time, providing the treatment plan is specific to you.
The Pyrrole Naturopath will spend a lot of time with you to investigate and find all of the causes of your symptoms and condtions, as everyone has different causes and symptoms. Then a personalised treatment plan can be designed specifically for you! Pyrrole treatment must be focused on treating the individual, NOT the diagnosis or symptoms alone.

Medical Treatments
There are no medical treatments for Pyrrole Disorder. Doctors and GPs fail to acknowledge the condition, don't test for it or diagnose it, and certainly don't treat it.
Doctors often misdiagnose Pyrrole Disorder as being depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or other conditions, and then prescribe medications which don't address the root causes, and often make symptoms worse. A common sign of pyrroles is having an intolerance to medications, or that medications actually increase the symptoms. This is not what you want!
The Pyrrole Naturopath will work with your medical or allied health team, if needed. Natural Pyrrole treatments and therapies can be used alongside or around your other medical treatments, and we are careful to prevent interactions that might reduce or increase the effect of the medical treatments.
